Cocke County, Sheriff named in federal suit after inmate death

GREENEVILLE—One year ago, Amanda Hill, 32, Newport, was found dead in a jail cell while serving time for a violation of probation charge.
A year later, her mother has filed a lawsuit against Cocke County, Cocke County Sheriff Armando Fontes and other Cocke County Jail staff members seeking $10 million in damages, alleging wrongful death and a series of violation of civil rights.

The 70-page lawsuit alleges, Hill, who was incarcerated at the Cocke County Jail in September 2016, was a type 1 diabetic and she was recovering from second and third degree burns when she did not receive proper medical attention by former correction officers and the former jail nurse which resulted in Hill’s death.
Hill was found dead in her jail cell on Sept. 28, 2016 and now her family has filed a wrongful death lawsuit against Cocke County Sheriff Armando Fontes and Cocke County Jail employees, along with the Cocke County government.
